They designed their home so that much of it could be closed off during the winter and only the rooms that they were living in would have to be heated. Being that they're on a fixed income as retirees this has worked well for them! Here in Texas we don't have to worry about the heat much and unfortunately in the summer the humidity makes life absolutely miserable without A/C. I could save tons on electricity if I could just get my wife and 3 kids to turn off the lights when they leave a room!! My parents practice this in their home in Wisconsin. I actually did a much longer post a few years ago on another blog (that of course I didn't save and can't find ... maybe I'll keep digging) with actual numbers, it was much more detailed. At least if you close rooms off, you don't have to clean 'em. ;) In my house with little grubby fingers that love to leave no surface untouched, that in itself is a good enough reason to close doors.
